Central Intelligence

It took me three times to get through Central Intelligence. I kept falling asleep on the same part every time. The promotion of this movie was more entertaining than the movie itself. The Rock and Kevin Hart are hilarious people but this movie does them no justice. The script was poorly written and corny. The plot was terrible and completely unbelievable. I would definitely recommend avoiding this one.

The Girl on the Train

I wanted to try to catch The Girl on the Train while it was in theaters but never made it. I’m glad I decided to rent it because it was a really great film. It’s based off of a novel that I never read, but now I want to read it.
This murder mystery, thriller has twists and turns you don’t see coming and a level of suspense in this film has you sitting on the edge of your seat. The women in this movie (Emily Blunt, Haley Bennett & Rebecca Ferguson) are so compelling, and the story is so good, it just sucks you right in. If you haven’t seen this one, I’d definitely recommend renting it.

Sugar Mountain

I came into this movie with very low expectations. Sugar Mountain is a straight to DVD, low budget, indie thriller-ish/drama. I decided to give it a shot because the story seemed interesting and because Jason Momoa is one of the actors in it. In the end, I was actually pleasantly surprised.
It’s a story of two brothers who are in massive debt and decide that one of them will fake a disappearance in the Alaskan woods so that when he re-emerges they can sell his story. The impact of his disappearance has quite an effect on his community and help to reveal some interesting truths.
Overall I’d say that the plot was able to hold my attention but I'm glad that this didn't go to theaters because this is a movie better suited for home viewing. If you are looking for an indie film with some great scenic shots, check this one out.

Hidden Figures

I finally saw Hidden Figures and was not disappointed. Wow, what a powerful and beautiful film. This movie is based on the true stories of three persistent, brilliant and groundbreaking African American women working for NASA during the Civil Rights Movement.
The performances of Taraji P. Henson, Octavia Spencer, Janelle MonĂ¡e and Kevin Costner were so moving and empowering. The story was written so well and the plot was incredibly engaging. The women and this film deserve all the praise it's receiving. If you haven't already seen it, I would definitely recommend checking out this movie.

Fifty Shades Darker

I made the big mistake of seeing Fifty Shades Darker on opening night. These films have a Twilight vibe to them, the poor acting mixed with the unnecessary female fan pandemonium. Once I got passed all of the women clapping and girlishly swooning over a fake character, I was able to enjoy to movie a little.
If you liked the book you'll appreciate the fact that the movie stuck pretty close to it. There were parts that felt a bit choppy and incomplete. It felt like they were trying to put in all the highlights of the book without giving it a proper background. The lack of context makes it super confusing for someone who might not have read these books. Also, I never thought Jamie Dornan was the best pick for the lead, I would have much rather seen Ian Somerhalder or Ryan Gosling take on the role, but I digress. My big issue with Jamie's portrayal of Christian Grey was the fact that he struggled keeping an American accent throughout the films. His Irish accent kept creeping through, which was quite disappointing. Overall the acting wasn't the best but I do feel it was an improvement from the first one and the plot was still engaging enough to want to sit through the accent and the acting.
If you choose to see this one, be sure stick around until after the credits to see the preview for Fifty Shades Freed & don't bring your kids, I saw 3 kids under the age of 10 and was a bit horrified by it.
